Ruth Plunkett Obituary

Ruth E. (Waible) Plunkett, age 89, of Middleborough, died on Friday, March 14, 2025, at the Signature Healthcare-Brockton Hospital in Brockton.

She was born March 6,1936, in Boston to Joseph A. Waible & Mary C. (Norton), both formerly of Boston.  Ruth grew up in Mission Hill, graduating from Mission High School in 1953.

Along with her husband and children, the family moved to Brockton in 1965, Stoughton in 1974, and retiring to Middleborough in 2001.

After having eight children, she returned to school for her degree in Nursing.  Ruth graduated from Massasoit Community College in Brockton in 1971, first in her class.  She worked at The Goddard Hospital in Stoughton, from 1967 to 1971 as a nursing assistant, then as a registered nurse, until the hospital merged in 1994.  Ruth completed her nursing career at the University Hospital in Boston, retiring in 1998.

She met Richard, her husband of 68 years at a roller rink in Allston.  Later, they would skate competitively out of Norwood, having earned a silver medal in the US National Amateur Competition, Fresno, California in 1992.

Ruth enjoyed golfing, singing, crocheting, and reading.  Along with her husband, she enjoyed traveling and attending any event that involved her children and grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her husband, Richard Alan Plunkett formerly of Middleborough; daughter, Katharine Marie Plunkett; grandson, Ryan G. Plunkett; daughter-in-law, Margaret (Meg) Plunkett; and siblings, Mary Breen, John Waible and Joseph Waible.

Ruth is survived by her children: Michael of Falmouth, Patricia A. & husband Donald Perkins of Middleborough, Mary E. & husband Richard Francis of Middleborough, Richard G. & wife Maureen of Westboro, Kevin A. & wife Susan of Kennebunk, Maine, Timothy A. & wife Paula of Valrico, Florida, Brian E. & wife Lisa of East Bridgewater; 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to the visiting hours at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, from 4:00-8:00 PM.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Ashley Funeral Home, Middleborough, on Thursday, March 20, 2025, starting at 9:45 AM, followed by Ruth's funeral Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Isidore Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 340 Centre Street, Middleborough, at 10:30 AM.

Interment at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Wood Street, Middleborough.
