OBITUARY: (MIDDLEBORO) Richard Allen Ray, aged 83 years, lifelong resident of Middleboro, died on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at his home, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Joan Elizabeth (Shurtleff) Ray, who predeceased him in July 2007. Born in Middleboro, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Cora Ray. He was a graduate of Middleborough Memorial High School. He was a Boy Scout leader in his early years. Richard had worked for the Middleboro Police Department for several years, and later went into corrections, working for Walpole Correctional Institute, and Bridgewater Correctional Institute, where he retired from after 30 years of service. He went on to work for the Middleboro Public Library for more than 20 years. Richard was a member of the John F. Glass Post #2188, and had served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. Richard was Chaplain of the American Legion in Floral City, FL, and Chaplain of the Middleboro V.F.W. #2188. He was a former member of the Central Baptist Church, Middleboro. His hobbies included cribbage, horse-shoes, bowling, watching the Red Sox, and spending time with his family and friends. Before the passing of his wife, he spent his retirement years in Floral City, FL. Survivors include four sons, Mark S. Ray of AZ, Paul E. Ray of Gulf Port, FL, Gary Ray of Epson, NH, and Steven Ray of Middleboro, two daughters, Cheryl Coley of Brooksville, FL, and Donna M. Jackson of Middleboro, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Richard will be warmheartedly remembered as a devoted father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and good friend to all who knew and loved him. Richard truly loved Middleboro and was always active in the community. Richard was the last surviving sibling of 14 children. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, February 22nd from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Egger Funeral Home, 61 Pearl St Middleboro. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 23rd at 10 am in the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later date.
