Richard A. Plunkett

Richard A. Plunkett, affectionately called "Stretch" by his friends, age 89, of Middleborough, died on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at his home.

He was born on October 8, 1932 in Lynn, to Richard S. & Katharine (MacKenzie) Plunkett.  Richard grew up in Mission Hill and graduated from English High School in Boston in 1950.  He joined the Army National Guard in 1948 transferring to the Army Reserves from which he retired with the rank of Major after 26 years of service.  Richard retired from the Boston Gas Company in 1996, after 40 years of employment.

He was a sports enthusiast, especially when it came to the Red Sox and Patriots.  He was quite the artist as a young man.  Richard also enjoyed golfing, roller skating, and gardening; he was very proud of his garden!  He met his wife of 69 years at a roller rink in Allston.  Later they would skate competitively out of Norwood, having earned a silver medal in the US National Amateur Competition in Fresno, CA in 1992.  He enjoyed traveling to Florida, cruising, and attending everything having to do with his children and grandchildren.

Richard is survived by his wife, Ruth E. (Waible) Plunkett of Middleborough; and children, John M. Plunkett & wife Margaret of Falmouth, Patricia A. & husband Donald Perkins of Middleborough, Mary E. & husband Richard Francis of Middleborough, Richard G. Plunkett & wife Maureen of Rochester, Kevin A. Plunkett & wife Susan of Kennebunk, ME, Timothy A. Plunkett & wife Paula of Valrico, FL, and Brian E. Plunkett & wife Lisa of East Bridgewater; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; brother, John E. Plunkett of Lancaster, NH; sister-in-law, Barbara (Wade) Waible of Easton; and many nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by a daughter, Katharine Marie.

All are welcome to the visiting hours at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Ashley Funeral Home, Middleborough, on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, starting at 10:15 AM, followed by his funeral Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Isidore Parish, Sacred Heart Church, 340 Centre Street, Middleborough, at 11:00 AM.

Interment at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Wood Street, Middleborough.
