Julio A. Lopes, Sr., age 100, of Middleborough, died peacefully on Sunday, June 13, 2021, at the Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleborough.
Born in Marion, he was the son of the late Arcenio & Leonora (Gonsalves) Lopes. In 1942, during World War II, Julio enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the India Burma and Central Burma Battles and received several medals and ribbons. He was honorably discharged as Corporal in 1945.
Julio started his working career for TransWorld Airlines (TWA) as a Lead Mechanic, a job he held for 30 years. In retirement, Julio repaired lawn mowers and small engines. He also kept busy mowing lawns.
He was very out-going, personable, sociable, and a conversationalist; these qualities led to many friendships. He loved visiting the state of Hawaii; travelling there 11 times during his life. His nickname was "MR. HAWAII".
Julio was the beloved husband of the late Helen M. (Gomes) Lopes; loving father of Lorraine Babbitt of Middleborough, Marie Pina & her husband Wayne of Wareham, Janet Jordan of North Attleboro, Julio A. Lopes, Jr. of Wareham and Judith Lopes of Bridgewater; devoted grandfather of six, great-grandfather of fourteen and great great-grandfather of two. He is also survived by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and lots of friends.
Family and friends are welcome to the visiting hours at the Ashley Funeral Home, 35 Oak Street, Middleborough, on Monday, June 21, 2021, from 4:00-7:00 PM.
All are invited to the funeral at the Ashley Funeral Home, Middleborough, on Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at 10:00 AM.
Interment with military honors at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Wood Street, Middleborough.
