Donald Mello Obituary

OBITUARY: (MIDDLEBORO) Donald F. Mello of Middleborough passed away peacefully after a brief illness on August 5, 2017. Don was just shy of his 89th birthday. He was a lifelong resident of Middleborough who loved nothing more than being with family. Don was a loving husband, father and friend who had deep connections to the community. Don retired from the Middleborough Branch of the post office after 30 years, first as a letter carrier and then working the window greeting customers. After retiring from the post office he worked at several area restaurants where he was well known not only for his friendly service but for entertaining customers with seasonal, patriotic and birthday serenades. Don thoroughly enjoyed being around people, sharing stories and singing songs. Don was an avid sports fan whether hometown Little League, Church League Basketball, High school athletics, Red Sox or Patriots. He played softball for many years and coached Church League Basketball and Little League with his son Robert. Don enjoyed traveling after retiring, taking a cross country trip with his wife Nellie to visit their son in Idaho and go to Las Vegas. He enjoyed trips to Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun with his wife and friends. Don also fulfilled a life long dream and visited the Azores with cousins and close friends. Don is survived by his wife of 71 years Nellie (Stone)Mello, his daughters and their husbands, Nancy and Clyde Swift of Carver, Louise and Ron Silvia of Carver and NC, his daughter-in-law Pauline Mello of Middleborough and his son Donald F. Mello, Jr of Idaho, eight grandchildren Adam Swift, Vicky Montanaro, Nancy Odom, Sarah Marcus, Dan and Nick Mello, Lisa and Dawn Mello, several great and great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy Costa and his son Robert. Don will be forever missed but is now singing and storytelling with the angels in heaven.
